MOSCOW MEDICAL ACADEMY

I.M.Sechenov Moscow Medical Academy (MMA) is the oldest and the largest national medical higher educational institution. For more than 200 years I.M.Sechenov Moscow Medical Academy, former I.M. Sechenov First Moscow Institute of Medicine has been playing a leading role in the development of medical science and training of medical and scientific personnel. According to the UNESCO international rating Moscow Medical Academy takes the second place after Rene Descartes Academy of the Medical Sciences.

In 1765 when Moscow University was established there were only three faculties – Philosophical, Legal and Medical. Medical Faculty Departments of Anatomy and Clinical Medicine, Physical and Pharmaceutical Chemistry, and Natural History started functioning in 1775.

In the period of 1887-1891 a complex of clinics attached to Moscow University Medical Faculty started functioning in Devichye Polye (Maiden’s Field). At that time it was one of the best in Europe.

In 1930 the Moscow University Medical Faculty was transformed into Moscow Medical Academy functioning on its own and comprising the Medical Faculty as well as the Sanitation and Hygiene Faculty. It was the first higher medical school in the world. In 1955 the Institute was given the name of the outstanding Russian scientist – Ivan M. Sechenov.

ACADEMY TODAY

Today the Academy is a major centre for training, certification and upgrading the medical personnel and pharmacists. Academic studies are closely integrated with the fundamental and applied research, providing highly qualified medical care to the population and promoting the advances of medical science and pharmaceutics.
It has 69 buildings for studies, classrooms and lecture halls, a clinical centre with 18 diverse clinics for 3080 patients, a research centre, a main library, a publishing section, a video-photo department, the laboratories, the botanical garden and four students’ hostels. The total area of the Academy training and laboratory premises exceeds 200 sq. m or 25 sq. m per student.

On a contract basis the Academy collaborates with 40 therapeutic-prophylactic and apothecary institutions, the research centres and institutes of Moscow.

Annually about 8000 students from Russia and foreign countries study at the Academy. They are trained in therapeutics, preventive medicine, pharmacy and nursing.

About 1500 graduates are involved in the post-graduate training as a part of internship (primary specialisation), clinical internship (residency), covering all clinical specialities, or post-graduate courses.

The Academy has created a highly-qualified faculty of Professors, teachers (instructors), scientists and research associates including 5 members of the Russian Academy of Sciences, 67 Members of the Russian Academy of Medical Sciences, 32 Members of the Russian Academy of Natural Sciences, 19 Members of the International Higher School Academy. The Academy employs about 3 thousand members of the faculty , research associates and doctors including 300 Doctors and 1,000 Candidates of Medical Sciences. The achievements of the scientists working at the I.M. Sechenov Moscow Medical Academy are widely-known both in Russia and abroad.

Moscow Medical Academy intensively develops scientific co-operation with medical research and training centres abroad. It is a member of the World Association of Universities. International, All-Russia, intercollegiate scientific congresses, conferences, symposia and seminars are regularly organised by or with the Academy’s support. A number of well-known scientists from MMA participate as specialists and experts in the work of UN, WHO and UNESCO bodies.

The international reputation of I.M. Sechenov Moscow Medical Academy has been confirmed by the high rating obtained in the UNESCO-held university competition. Since 1989 it has been taking the second place among the higher medical institutions of the world.
